EMERGENCY SHELTER CARE
Program Mission:

The children placed in shelter care, their families and other caregivers are treated with dignity, respect and consideration for their situation. The program is designed to meet the basic needs of the children and to facilitate fulfillment of their individual treatment plan.

Target Population:

Males and females ages 6 to 18. The program is capable of sheltering 14 boys and girls.

Referral Process:

Referrals are accepted through a 24-hour referral line (574-875-4403) from Division of Children Services and Division of Court Services (probation department) from Elkhart as well as surrounding counties, referrals from local law enforcement agencies and self-referrals from children. Private family referrals are considered on an individual basis.

Treatment Philosophy:

Provide a stable, safe, structured and compassionate environment to children and youth requiring protective care on a short-term basis.

The program seeks to stabilize the behavior of residents and teach responsibility through predictable, dependable expectations and daily structure. It teaches socially acceptable interpersonal relationship skills, self respect, self esteem and basic living skills.

Discharge Planning:

The program director and case manager work with the placing agency to determine proper transition to parents or guardians, foster care or a preferred residential program. Follow-up includes wraparound and other services determined by the placing agency.

24-hour adult supervision with trained youth care staff for crisis stabilization

Immediate and basic food, shelter and clothing needs

Transportation to and from school and appointments

Recreation activities utilizing the Pekarek Adventure Course

Educational services available to residents not enrolled in public schools

Encourages family involvement when appropriate for reunification

Case management designed toward establishing a permanency plan

Spiritual needs provided through campus chaplain or preferred faith of the family
